Thinking Inside & Outside the Box

Choosing the Right Barrier Films for Bag-in-Box Packaging: PE, EVOH, and Met-PET Explained

Bag-in-Box Packaging – Barrier Films, Functions, and Recyclability

Bag-in-Box (BIB) packaging has become a trusted solution across industries from wine and water to food ingredients and chemicals. At the heart of every Bag-in-Box system is the film – a multi-layer structure that protects the product, extends shelf life, and ensures safe transport.

But not all films are created equal.

Depending on the product, different barrier layers are used to provide resistance to oxygen, moisture, and light. Here’s a closer look at the most common barrier materials used in Bag-in-Box and their roles.

1. Polyethylene (PE) – The Workhorse

  • Function: PE is the backbone of most Bag-in-Box films. It provides sealability, flexibility, and moisture resistance.
  • Barrier Properties: Excellent at holding liquid contents, but limited oxygen barrier.
  • Applications: Ideal for water, some dairy applications, and low-sensitivity products.
  • Recyclability: PE is widely recyclable and often used as the primary component in single structure bag designs.

2. Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH) – A good oxygen shield

  • Function: EVOH offers a effective oxygen barrier available in flexible packaging.
  • Barrier Properties: Great at blocking oxygen transmission, though can be sensitive to humidity (performance can decrease).
  • Applications: Good for oxygen-sensitive products like wine, fruit juices, sauces, and liquid egg.
  • Recyclability: EVOH can be incorporated in tailored percentages within PE structures while maintaining recyclability.

3. Metallised PET (Met-PET) – The belt and braces

  • Function: Met-PET uses a thin aluminium coating on PET film to block light, gases, and aromas.
  • Barrier Properties: Excellent for both oxygen and light protection, with added stiffness.
  • Applications: High-value products such as wines, concentrates, and sensitive ingredients.
  • Recyclability: More challenging to recycle due to mixed materials, but innovations in separation and mono-material alternatives are progressing.

Why Barrier Films Matter The choice of film directly impacts:

  • Shelf Life – Oxygen-sensitive products last longer with EVOH or Met-PET barriers.
  • Product Integrity – Light and oxygen barriers prevent spoilage and maintain flavour.
  • Sustainability – Moving towards recyclable mono-material structures reduces environmental impact.

Looking Ahead: Recyclable Solutions

At Peak Packaging UK, we’re committed to developing more sustainable Bag-in-Box options. From specially formulated PE structures to reduced-barrier blends, the industry is moving towards recyclability without compromising performance.
